The Goodlife Open, played Nov. 9-12, attracted 78 entries, including players from Toronto, Kingston, and Montreal. The Premier Invitational event, run as a round robin, included Samantha Cornett, currently No. 26 in the World Women’s rankings, Maxym Leclair and David Guest, two of Ottawa’s leading male players, and Tarun Balaraj, a top Ottawa Junior. Sam won the event, coming from a 2 game deficit to beat David 9-11, 6-11, 11-3, 11-8, 11-4, and then beating Maxym 9-11, 11-8, 14-16, 12-10, 11-9 in a thriller, with Maxym recovering from 3-7 in the 4th game to take the lead at 10-7, but being unable to capitalize on 3 match points.
Both the Men’s A and B finals went the full 5 games, with Alex Gloor prevailing over Brett Harris in the A, and Edwin Aguilar over Erez Paz in the B. The Women’s A/B event went to Sally Guest, with a comfortable win over Tracey Sly. In other action, Eric Thibeault beat Jaco Du Plooy 3-1 for the Men’s C, Sid Kalia was unbeaten in the Men’s D round robin,, Peri Agate took the the Women’s C/D over Samantha Damm, and the husband/wife team of Sally and David Guest did not drop a game in winning the Doubles title.
