ODSA Open City League Rules

Team Composition:
1. Each team must carry a minimum of 4 'regular' players. These players are NOT eligible to play for any other team in the *same or lower* divisions within a single session, however team lineups may be changed at the beginning of each session at the discretion of the club reps. In the event that a club chooses to carry 5 'regular' players per team, the lowest ranked player is elegible to play as a spare for other teams as long as the other rules below are respected. Any player may spare "up" from their current division without regard to this rule.
2.

Spares may be used as needed. Spares can play for multiple teams, even within the same session, however if a particular Spare has been employed more than 5 times within the past 2 sessions, they must choose one team and stick with it.

3.

Spares may not be used for the sole purpose of strengthing a team when the regular player was otherwise available.

4.

Spares may play "down" one division from their normal playing level so long as they respect strength order on the team they spare for. Spares may not play MORE than one division down. Spares may play "up" any number of divisions, but must respect strength order on the team they spare for.

Strength Order:
5.

Teams must play in strength order. Some exceptions follow.

6. Positional swapping is permitted between adjacent positions on a team IF two players are very close in ability, in order to reflect the relative strength on a given week or provide some variety of opponents.
7.

Positional swapping is permitted between ANY players on a team if it can be backed up by sanctioned match results.

8.

Players may "play down" within their team in the event of illness or injury as long as other players do not "play up" by MORE than one position. ie: Player #1 may play at position #4 if they are injured (to avoid default), but player #4 may not play at position #1 unless all higher players are unavailble.

Player Eligibility:
9.

Illegal Players are defined as:

9a.

Any 'regular' player from one team playing for another. As per (1).

9b.

Any 'spare' not meeting the requirements of (2).

9c.

Any 'spare' brought in unnecessarily, as per (3).

9d.

Any 'spare' not meeting the requirements of (4).

9e.

Any player 'swapping up' more than 1 spot unnecessarily. As per (8).
10.

In the event of an illegal player being used, all points earned by the illegal player AND ALL LOWER players on the same team will be forfeit and awarded to the opposing team.

11.

If a player's eligibility is in question, please consult the League Coordinator.

12.

REGARDLESS of a player's eligibility, ALL conditions in (9) may be waived with the consent of the opposing team captain. Feel free to ask ahead of time if special circumstances arise.

Match Scoring / Officiating:
13. All matches must be refereed unless court construction prohibits it. This is a requirement for league sanctioning by Squash Ontario. Any player refusing a referee may receive a default result.
14. All matches are the best three out of five games. The winner receives 5 points for the match and the loser received 1 point per game won.
15. The season consists of five sessions of five weeks. At the end of the each session, the top team in each division will be promoted to the next division and the bottom team will be demoted. At the end of the First session of the season, the top and bottom TWO teams will be moved.
League Scoring / End of Season Winners:
16.

Historically, the league champions were determined each year simply by the winners of the 5th/final session of the regular season. However, in the
2004-2005 season, a new algorithm was adopted in an attempt to take into account a number of factors that made the old method somewhat unfair - including weighting results from earlier sessions, movement between divisions, etc. Specifically, winning teams are now determined as follows:
-

To be elegible to win a Division, a team must participate in that division for at least 3/5 sessions, including Session 4 and/or Session 5.
-

Each eligible team's most recent 3 scores in that division are considered, and given the following multiplier and the team with the highest total score will be considered the overall winner:
-

3x for the most recent score
2x for the next most recent score
1x for the 3rd most recent score
-

As a result, a team that wins session 4 and moves up a division may very well be awarded as the final winner of the lower division.
Or, a team which has a weak 5th session may win on the merit of two earlier/stronger sessional results.

Defaults:
17. All players must be present by their scheduled start time, which may vary by club (see "Start Times" on the schedules page). A 15 minute grace period will be given in case of a no-show, after which the offending team will receive a -15 point penalty for the week.
18. With the consent of both team captains and the players involved (ahead of time), arrangements may be made to play matches anytime before Sunday following the Wednesday of play. All results, including that of the makeup match must be submitted together.
19. If a team defaults on three separate weeks within the entire season, it may be rejected from the League in the following season.
20. Individual clubs will be left to decide how to deal with players responsible for the defaults.
Responsibility of Team Captains:
1. Ensure a full team is ready and able to play for each league match.
2. If required, contact the opposing team captain in advance and discuss all matters pertaining to the match (i.e., rescheduled matches) and generally ensure everything runs smoothly.
3. Team captains, from BOTH teams must arrange to have match results entered via the web entry form by the Friday of each week. Failure to enter results by Sunday at the absolute latest on the 5th week of the session may result in a 0 score.
4. If the captain is unable to play or be present, another member of the team must be appointed to act as captain.
5. None of the above rules will be proactively enforced by the League Coordinator - it is up to the individual team captains to bring any grievance to the attention of the Coordinator, at which time appropriate action will be taken if a rule has, in fact, been violated.
Responsibility of Club Reps:
1. Must provide a complete list of all team players and captains with contact information (preferrably email) at the start of the season. Also should inform the League Coordinator any time a team captain is changed throughout the season.
2. Ensure all necessary home courts are properly booked each week for the entire session.
3. Follow up with any teams from their club who have not submitted results via the web entry form on a given week.

ALL MATTERS THAT CANNOT BE RESOLVED BY TEAM CAPTAINS MUST BE REFERRED TO THE LEAGUE COORDINATOR FOR DECISION.
