Ottawa Racketlon

If you haven’t heard of Racketlon yet or if you are still kicking yourself for not signing up for last year’s Summer event, you should check this out. Squash players enjoy a distinct advantage at Racketlon since they are able to dominate all the Badminton/Tennis & Ping Pong posers at sqaush, while holding their own admirably at the other sports. Last year we had about 6 squash players from the region take part in this event – come join us this year and help use this great opportunity to show why Squash players are indeed the best racket sport athletes! Click here for the flyer with full event information and entry details.

Bronze finish for ODSA at the Winter Games!

On March 4th, the ODSA's Ontario Winter Games Team headed to Sudbury to compete in the 2010 Ontario Junior Winter Games. Friday was a grueling day of squash, with three team matches in a row. The ODSA team squeaked out a win over a much improved Northwestern team 16 games to 12, then won convincing matches against the teams from the Northern and Central regions. Saturday saw us taking on Toronia for the final round-robin match. We ended the round robin in 2nd place, which put us up against Toronto, the strongest team in the tournament. After a 7-1 loss to them, we were set to play our arch-rivals Niagara for 3/4 on Sunday. As usual, that match was extremely close and very exciting. This year Ottawa came out ahead by one game, securing us the bronze medal!

Johnny and I would both like to thank the parents and fans that came out to support Ottawa - the cheering was great! - and the whole team who made it such a fun and entertaining weekend. We all had a great time!

Thank You From Ottawa Junior Squash

Fundraising for the ODSA Juniors was a great success again this year. Thank you to all who placed an order for the Holiday Wreaths, and Centrepieces. Delong Farms in Nova Scotia gives us a great opportunity to fund raise for the junior Grand Prix events, Gold and Silver events, Jim Mason high school tournament, and the Junior Team that represents Ottawa at the Winter Games and Team Championships every year . If you missed your chance this year to get your Wreath or Centrepiece, watch for the notice next October for 2010/11 season!!! See you next year! Cheers Jan Lardner

Ontario Master's Closed Results

The 2009 Ontario Masters Closed Singles Championships, with men's and women's categories from age 35 and up, were held at the Fabulous Fitness Racquet Club in Concord, just north of Toronto, over the weekend of November 13-15. There were 146 entrants including nine competitors from Ottawa. The Ottawa contingent gave a very credible showing, picking up three gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal.

Gold medalists:
Julie Springer-Aass (Queensview)
Lorraine Tetreault (Queensview)
Vincent Taylor (Queensview)

Silver medalists:
Paulette Cogliatti (RA)
Martin Aass (Queensview)

Barbara Byrne (RA), Viola Hennessay (RA) and Steve Su (OAC) were our other Ottawa players and they represented us well. Penny Glover and Mikola Czich did yeoman service all weekend as tourney officials. The tournament, which was well run and a lot of fun, was also a key element in the selection of the seven person (4 men, 3 women) Masters team representing Ontario in the Canadian Team Championships being held in Saskatoon in mid January 2010. The team will be officially announced some time in December.

The next Ontario Masters Singles Championship will be the Masters Open, to be held at the Glenway Country Club in Newmarket over the weekend of 26-28 March 2010. Registration will be through the Squash Ontario website.

Greco ODSA Cup 2009-2010!

Hello all, After a summer with weather so crap that I found myself praying for snow, it is with great pleasure that I announce the kickoff for this year's Greco ODSA Cup Squash Championship! For the uninitiated, the Greco ODSA Championship Cup is a year long tournament with matches played on your own courts and time, culminating in an exciting finals night at the end of the year, crowning the CHAMPION of OTTAWA as well as patting the backs of B, C, and D winners from across the city. The numbers have been growing every year, and involve over 100 active squash players at every skill level.... and with the matches played on your own time, there should be no excuses! As always, it is difficult to obtain the e-mail addresses for everyone in Ottawa who plays squash, so PLEASE pass this along to your friends if they do not know about it so that no one misses out! To read the rules and details and look at last year's results, click on the 2008-2009 ODSA Cup text on the left.

This year's tournament fee remains at the incomprehensibly low cost of $10. For your fee you will get a year of tournament organization, a chance at lots of great prizes (draw prizes as well as earned prizes), FREE BEVERAGES at the end of season finals night, and a free squash ball! This is without a doubt the BEST DEAL in TOWN. All for now - looking forward to the entries rolling in! Cheers, Neil

City League 2009/2010 Season Set to Begin

The schedule and teams for the first city league session are set. Good luck everyone on great season. As webmaster, I shall take this opportunity to request that players think twice before firing off complaints related to schedule to the tireless volunteers in the ODSA. Scheduling is a very complicated task that requires fitting all the matches needed over the session and divisions into the limited court times that are provided by the participating clubs. It is far too complicated to be done by hand so this task is done by a sophisticated computer program (courtesy of Brian Eldridge). The program works by simply generating hundreds and thousands of schedule permutations trying to find one that actually works. Frankly, it is a miracle that a fit is found every session. Yes, some of you will find yourselves seemingly with undesirable times and too many away games (just like in Vegas there will be winners and losers). However, please remember that someone has spent their evening and weekend hours to make it as good as it is - which is pretty darn good.
