Steve Wren

Biography

Born in New Zealand in Feb 1966 and educated at Christchurch Boys High School. Coached mainly by Bruce Marriott at the Sumner Club as a junior player.  Settled in Toronto in 1986 while visiting and competing on the North American squash circuit, and moved to Gatineau in 2000, where he has resided since, with his wife (Hélène) and three children (Calvin, Dominic, and Chloé), apart from a 3 year stint back in NZ from 2006-09. Member of La Sporthèque Club since 2000.

Accomplishments

  • Canterbury, South Island, and North Island Junior Champion, U17, U19 & U23 between 1982 and 1985.
  • Represented NZ in the NZ Junior Men’s Team, Test series versus Malaysia in 1983, and at World Junior Championships in Calgary in 1984 and was Senior Club Champion at Sumner Tennis & Squash Club (Christchurch, NZ) in 1984 and 1985.
  • Between 1986 and 1995, he worked as a Squash Pro at Carlson Court Club, Curzon’s Sporting Clubs, and the Regency Racquets & Fitness Club in the Toronto area. During this time he coached Jonathan Power, Graham Ryding and Shahier Razik who were later to gain No. 1, 9, and 23 World rankings, respectively.
  • In his younger days he attained No. 1 ranking in Ontario in 1991/92, No. 7 in Canada and No. 86 in the world, and was Ontario Closed champion in 1988 and finalist on 5 other occasions.
  • Represented and captained Ontario Men’s Squash Team, at the Canadian Provincial Teams Champs, 1987 to 1993, and won Canadian Provincial Teams Champs title, 1991.
  • Recipient: “1994 Racquets Professional of the Year Award” – I.H.R.S.A. group of Health and Fitness Clubs, Ontario
  • In 1995 he turned from being a professional squash player to becoming a successful businessman, but has always kept up his interest in developing juniors at La Sporthèque from 2000 on-wards,  being involved in organizing tournaments, and participating in the administration of the sport.   This included initiating the inaugural “La Sporthèque Pro-Am Squash Championships”; Gatineau’s first Professional World Squash (PSA) Tour Circuit event staged at La Sporthèque Club, in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006.
  • Member of the Canterbury senior men and Canterbury masters teams concurrently, winning the New Zealand Masters Provincial Team Championships in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
  • Winner of the Adrian Dudzicki ODSA Cup in 2006, 2011, and 2016.
  • World Masters Champs (Christchurch 2008) – Men’s 40+: 4th place.
  • World Masters Games (Turin, 2013) – Men’s 45+: Silver Medal.
  • World Masters Games (Auckland, 2017) – Men’s 50+: Silver Medal
  • US Men’s 40+ champion in 2009 and 2010,  45+ champion in 2011, 2012, and 2014, finalist in 2013 and 2015, and 50+ finalist in 2016.
  • Canadian Men’s 45+ champion in 2011 and 2013, finalist in 2014, and 50+ champion in 2016.
  • 2016 British Open Men’s 50+ champion
  • 2016 Americas Masters Games 50+ runner-up
  • Member of Quebec Masters teams which captured the Canadian Provincial Masters Team championships in 2012 and 2016.
  • Elected a Director of Squash Canada in 2014
