On the week-end of January 11-13, thirty players, from Montreal and Eastern Ontario, wended their way to the Smith Falls Squash Club for its annual tournament.
In an entertaining exhibition match, David Guest of the OAC beat Fernando Hernandez of Montreal 11-7, 11-9, 11-5. In the “B” event, Clark Johnston (RA) beat Scott Tindal (YMCA Kingston) 11-6, 11-7, 11-8, after the latter had survived 11-8, 7-11, 6-11, 11-1, 11-5 in his semi-final against Assad Khan (RA). Clark recovered from a slow start to beat Ross Kircher of Queen’s University 9-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-4, in the other semi-final.
In the “C” event final, Dale Garrah of the YMCA Kingston beat Majid Charania (RA) in three straight, while Debbie Witham (RA) eked out a close victory over Derek Evans of the Garrison Club, Kingston, 9-15, 15-13, 15-11, 13-15, 15-13, for 3rd place. The “D” event was won by Terry Wills of the home club, 15-9, 20-18, 11-15, 15-11 over Gananoque’s Mike Warren. The losing semi-finalists were John Deutekom (Barrhaven) and Steve Cove of Gananoque.
